Approaching the Aged Care Conversation

For many seniors, starting with an in-home aged care service brings relief and renewed freedom. It’s the peace of mind of knowing regular help is at hand, to help them maintain their independence. However, for some, it’s quite confronting to admit they’re no longer able to take care of themselves at home. If you have a loved one who needs help with daily living, and you’re unable to provide the help they need, you may be looking at ways to start that conversation with them. Here are some tips to help you prepare.

Look for the Signs of Changing Needs

If you’ve noticed a loved one declining in any of these areas, you’re doing the right thing by starting to look at additional care for them.

Mobility – if your loved one is having more trouble than usual moving around, they may be at increased risk of a fall.

Mental/memory health – look out for signs of confusion, memory issues or communication difficulties. These issues can increase their risk of wandering, or may lead to continence issues due to not making it to the bathroom in time.

Daily tasks –  if they’re having trouble maintaining regular cooking and cleaning routines, shopping, or personal care, some additional regular support will provide peace of mind around safety, hygiene and nutrition needs.

Don’t Put Off the Conversation

It’s helpful to give your loved one time to consider their options. In many cases, care decisions are made in a rush, because the person’s needs change suddenly – for example, after a fall or a medical episode. So, approaching these care questions early, with time to research and consider the options, can alleviate some of the stress of the situation.

Listen Carefully

Ask questions about your loved one’s feelings on the situation, when they think they might need additional care, whether they have any worries, and how they feel about their independence. At this life stage, family dynamics can change as a ‘child’ becomes a carer, so it’s important to ensure the senior family member maintains their feelings of independence and control.

Discuss the Aged Care Options Together

There are many different options to consider – from short-term respite care, to in-home care services, through to residential aged care. Your loved one’s needs may dictate which kind of care they could benefit most from. In-home care services can be a great place to start – helping them to maintain their independence at home, while receiving a helping hand with some of the tasks that have become harder to manage.
